February Playlist
A collection of songs I liked in the month of February:
Milk Music "Cruising with God"
The good news--this new Milk Music song melts and it is on a new LP dropping April 2.
The bad news--they are coming to Boston with Merchandise on June 9 and I will be long gone by then. Dammit.

Gotta love Juicy J.
Valentina "Wolves"
And the roads in a straight line
and I wouldn't wanna leave you
the roads in a straight line
and none of them deceive you
Spook Houses - The "Trying" LP
I knew nothing about Spook Houses other than a friend with impeccable taste recommended them. That was about ten listens ago.
Per their bandcamp:
Formed in Ridgewood, NJ by Colin Alexander and David Benton in the Spring of 2010, SPOOK HOUSES makes high energy indie rock songs with quiet moments, taking influence from Built to Spill, Michael Hurley and Weezer. With Alkis Meimaris on bass and Nick Corbo on drums, they are set to release their debut LP Trying this August on Evil Weevil Records. Trying is the fully-realized follow up to the band's self-released Home EP, which featured four lofi nostalgia-jams. SPOOK HOUSES have shared bills with Real Estate, Screaming Females, Beach Fossils and Twin Sister. This ain't no pilgrim band.

Mike Skinner and Danny Brown
Danny Brown and Mike Skinner discuss styles:
Chance the Rapper - 10 Day Tape
I have been nodding my head on long bus rides to the salt mines to the tunes of Chance the Rapper's mixtape 10 Day.
The ability to create a tape centered around a single premise and never letting it go stale is something that manyrappers musicians never master, but Chance makes it look easy with 10 Day, a record made about (and possibly during) a 10 day suspension for smoking weed in his school parking lot.
With a flow that is a nice mix of Kanye, dude from Pharcyde and Kid Cudi, Chance creates tracks melodic enough for causal listens and technical enough for rap nerds to applaud. The beats on the tape are boom-bappy enough for the Golden Era fans and forward enough for the blograp fanboys, and the outcome is a mixtape created by a distinct point of view that plays well to the masses.

The Babies - Our House on the Hill
Oscillating between 50's poodle-skirt-era rockabilly, stripped-bare navel gazing and 60's surf rock, The Babies' LP Our House on the Hill is as well-crafted as it is diverse. Formed by member of Vivian Girls and Woods, this record shows that this project deserves to be recognized as a force in its own right.
The duo gets the most out of their sound and their lyrics, as they seem to know exactly how to present their material in the most infectious manner. This is the case for each song on the record regardless of mood or style and is a testament to the strong song-writing. Splitting the vocals between the band members is a wise decision, as each voice perfectly suits the tone of the given track.
Standouts of the record are "Mean", an acoustic downer about leaving a party after an argument with a significant other featuring a sterling sax solo, and "Baby", an incredibly catchy cry for attention.
The songs on this record will be living in my head for the foreseeable future; luckily, they are welcome guests.

Bonnaroo 2013
I got a text from a friend about the Bonnaroo line-up this year. I heard Paul McCartney's name and fucking lost it. I think this may be the year I finally make the trip.

Pusha T - Wrath of Cain
I have been bumpin' the new Pusha T for weeks now but haven't written about it on here because I submitted the review I would have used to a publication that will never publish it. Fuck me, right?
This shit is straight crack. Go download it immediately.
While I don't like the hook on the song below, Push just murders this one, especially the second verse. The whole illuminati/ John F or Bobby run is amazing.

Justin Timberlake "Suit and Tie" Video
This is what happens when David Fincher directs your music video:
The Knife - Silent Shout
I love "Heartbeats" as much as the next guy, but I had never listened to The Knife until tonight. I just finished listening to Silent Shout and it is nothing short of brilliant. It is a work of staggering genius. It is a life changer. My mind is blown. I'm speechless. It is epic. It is as close to perfection as I think art can be.

Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold
Light Up Gold by Parquet Courts is the first great record of the year (although technically released in 2012, I didn't hear it until this re-release sooo yeah, it's a 2013 record in my book. Deal with it).
At once being a crystallization of what it is to be in your early 20's in 2013 and what it is to be in your early 20's in any era, Light Up Gold is everything I want to say but am not able to articulate about my life. It touches on all of the hallmark feelings of being of this age: being envious of those who are successful while dismissing those same people, being a slacker and wanting to be great, underachieving, the feeling of being stuck in the same place forever, not being as smart as you thought you were, feeling smarter than everyone else , wondering why life isn't as easy as it used to be, being scared, being hopeful, being stricken with self-doubt, needing to find a job, the disgust you feel considering jobs you morally oppose, not being able to afford transport, taking drugs, starving, being cynical, loathing entitlement, being full of love and hatred.
Being full of opposing notions and being hyper-aware of this condition is constantly being driven home on this album. Lyrically, there is a constant feeling of yearning on this record; there is a sense that if the speaker could just get out of his own way he would be cured of his anxiety. However, not being able to get his head on straight because of his own trappings only adds to his angst. Essentially, Light Up Gold is an hour long tale of existential crises and recovery told with keen wit and churning guitars.
And it is a tale that employs astonishingly high-quality lyricism. The words oscillate between the micro and the macro-- the specific and the general, the other and the self-- with amazing ease. Memorable lines aren't sung as much as they are vomited out. They pour out of the vocalists like a crowd of people trying to exit a club fire through the same door.
The instrumentation creates a mood of controlled chaos and inner turmoil, the LP is a poignantly crafted slacker-rock/ college radio aesthetic that falls somewhere between the Replacements and Guided By Voices.
There is a strong chance this will be my favorite record of the year and a guarantee that this will be on permanent loop on the ol' Ipod. Give it a listen.

Drake "Started From the Bottom" Video
Gotta love Drake's new video for "Started From the Bottom".
Grammy Predictions 2013
The Grammys are fast approaching so, as promised, your boy is gonna weigh in on the pettifoggery:
Look for Frank Ocean to walk away with a bundle of awards tonight. He is the sort of artist the Grammys loves to be seen supporting; a young, fresh singer who is seen as an advocate for the LGBT community.
Adele is gonna win for pop performance of the year. Take that to the bank.
If The Roots Undun doesn't win for Hip Hop Album of the Year I will be extremely upset. That album was genius. If Take Care wins, I won't be as mad. If Nas wins I'll be pissed. Ever since Dream Hampton outed the dude for using ghost writers I can't cheer for him.
The Grammys love Jack White. Don't ever forget that. Too bad they are in the same category as Mumford and Sons, who were originally called The Grammy Bait, but were talked out of it by their PR guy. They did keep their suspenders and their folk songs about broad, relatable themes, however, so Babel will win the rock Album of the Year.
I hope Alabama Shakes win for "Hold On". That song is dope. If Springsteen wins, my scoff will be heard from coast to coast.
Frank Ocean takes home the big one for Channel Orange.

Dad Stories™-- Sly and the Family Stone
The first of an on-going series that details my dad's connection to music and how it shaped me:
My father loves Sly and the Family Stone. I grew up listening to Sly records, but it wasn't until a few days ago that I gave them a listen with adult ears. I must say, I see what my dad (and millions of others) found attractive about the music. Sly's voice is uniquely engaging, and sounds equally at home on party-starters and reflective tunes alike. The funk is undeniable, and I can only imagine how fun a live show must have been. Which brings me to a Dad Story™:
It was some time in the 1970's and my old man must have been about my age. He was working at a local greasy spoon that specialized in fried foods. Sly and the Family Stone were playing at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, a few miles away from where my dad was stuck cleaning tables and wiping down counters. The concert had a 7 pm start time. At 9 pm, a tour bus pulls up outside. The doors opened and a cloud of smoked rushed out, and a few seconds after an Afro'd figure emerged. It was Sly Stone.
My dad, being a huge fan, pulled a cartoonish double-take and fixed his tie as he moved back behind the counter. He assumed the band must be lost, as they were two hours late and a long way from home.
Sly strutted through the door wearing the same clothes that he was prone to wearing onstage (that wasn't part of the act, dude was just about that life) and walked up to my father. My dad extended his hand and told Sly that he was a big fan. Sly graciously shook his hand, but looked baffled when my dad asked if he needed directions.
"Nah, not at all. We're just hungry. We need some food before we take the stage."
My dad gave them their food on the house, Sly dapped him up and the bus rolled away. Apparently, they didn't take the stage until sometime after eleven.
The bus stopped by again after the show in the wee hours of the morning and the same transaction took place. My dad gave them their food, pleasantries were exchanged and the band rolled on.
So, while he didn't get to see the concert in person, my father did get to meet one of his favorite musicians twice in the same night. That was one of the few times that the smell of chicken grease and french fries was worth the minimum wage pay.

Parquet Courts "Careers in Combat"
I listened to Parquet Courts for the first time today. I think I'm in love. More words when cogent thoughts come to me. For now:
Syron "Here"
Syron is a female R&B/Pop singer from the UK, just like seemingly every talented singer to emerge in the last two years.
This track is "Here". Enjoy.
Chance the Rapper "Juice"
Chance the Rapper is yet another rapper behind the meteoric resurgence of the Chicago rap scene. Flirting with the line between happy-go-lucky and introspective, "Juice" can be found on his upcoming Acid Rap.
Question: Am I the only one who remembers Chance from VH1's I Love New York? If memory serves me, he was a former rapper once signed to Capitol records.
Additional Question: Am I the only one who remembers when VH1 was a television stationcentered around music?

Ducktails-The Flower Lane
Ducktails' latest is a masterful dream pop record. I won't spoil it by using boring words, but it is the leading candidate for best release of the year thus far along with Pusha T's Wrath of Caine.
Beyonce at the Super Bowl
Ravens and 49ers, I'm happy for you and Ima let you finish, but Beyonce's halftime performance was the greatest Super Bowl performance of all time!
