How To Dress Well

How To Dress Well was fantastic on Sunday Night at Brighton Music Hall.

This performance was different from the first time I saw him at the same venue last November; this time showed Tom Krell much more relaxed drunk, leading to many terrific stories such as:

  • The story of his car breaking down in "a section of Connecticut where people had no teeth". Apparently, our fearless leader had to wait it out in a Staples until helped arrived, which he described as "one of the most depressing places on Earth".
  • Tom Krell apparently met up with Maxwell after a show in New York a few days ago. Maxwell invited him to the studio where they "Took a bunch of ecstasy and listened to Juicy J" until 2 A.M.
These two things were the reason for the performance's bumpier parts, but the highs were well worth the lows. The lack of preparation gave a markedly different feel to the performance than at his previous stop in Beantown, but even an incredibly blitzed HTDW (he was taking bottle shots on stage) is still impeccable.

When he belted out some of the more stirring parts of the album they rang just as true as the sober, polished version, and this performance also showed Krell letting his guard down and going for the gusto which was mostly a great decision.

Dude also rocked a black on white t-shirt depicting Kanye West as a pharaoh, soooo yeah. Epic.

How To Dress Well At Brighton Music Hall

I saw How To Dress Well play on Sunday night at Brighton Music Hall in Allston. It was the single most moving performance I have ever witnessed. It was life-affirming. It was the closest thing I will ever have to a religious experience.

Some takeaways:

  • The projected videos shown throughout the show were crafted perfectly for the live versions of each track. Krell and Co. incorporated the visuals expertly throughout the set--(pauses in sound were synced with pauses in video, Krell's emotions were imitated on the screen, etc.) One particularly striking moment came when, after a pregnant pause, Krell clapped in perfect harmony with the shift in video to black, only for the screen to flash to white imagery as the song climaxed.
  • Much like Tom Krell, the performance held the perfect blend of being taken very seriously by the artist while not making you feel like you had to be impressed. It was laid-back but very well rehearsed.
  • The live version of 'Ready For the World" was fantastic. The first verse heavily featured the violin which, along with the articulated vocals, made it feel like you were seeing an old friend for the first time in years. The second verse was the cover of R.Kelly's "I Wish" and the third was sung over a dance remix to the track.
  • "Set it Right" will forever live in my mind. Krell singing "..i miss you" to a crowd that was so enamored you could hear a pin drop was breathtaking. And then the bass dropped. The floor literally rumbled as Krell Diva'd out his vocals and my jaw hit the floor. Amazing.
  • Krell came back for the encore to do an impromptu, a capella cover of Xix Xiu's "Clowne Towne". As he began his falsetto, a pool table could be heard releasing balls for a new game. As he started into "Decisions"--now having walked away from the microphone entirely-the faint clanking of billiards shots could be heard in the background as the crowd watched in utter silence. It was surreal. It will never be duplicated. It is the very reason I go to concerts.

How To Dress Well

I love How To Dress Well.

I love How To Dress Well so much that I not only own his first CD, but the 7"  EP he released...and I don't own a record player.

I love How to Dress Well so much that I have resisted the urge to listen to any streams of the album because I wanted to wait for the real thing.

I love How To Dress Well so much I didn't watch the UK-Florida game this weekend so that I could take a 30 minute bus trip to buy his new album...only to find that the Newbury Comics in Braintree doesn't carry it.

That hurt. That cut deep.

I returned to my house, head in hands, and fired it up on Spotify.

dear...DEAR GOD!

IT IS AMAZING!

IT IS EVERYTHING I HOPED IT WOULD BE AND MORE!

GIVE IT A LISTEN IMMEDIATELY!

How To Dress Well on Pitchfork Weekly

I love How To Dress Well. So much so that I haven't even listened to the advanced release of his album (I'm waiting 'till that shit is physically in my hands). I was hyped to see this segment of Tom Krell on Pitchfork Weekly. Can't wait for this LP to drop.

How To Dress Well Cover Janet Jackson, Continues to Get Me Hyped for New Album

Here is How To Dress Well's cover of Janet Jackson's "Again". Much like his excellent R.Kelly cover (which you can find over at yourstru.ly) it makes you see the song in a new light and compels you to revisit the original--basically, it does exactly what ever cover should do.

Total Loss drops mid-September. HTDW is touring Europe and the states over the new few months. Get into it.
